Is It Worth Buying iPhone Without A Face ID?

iPhone Face ID is not a make or break feature an iPhone without Face ID is still worth buying especially if there’s a discount. Using Face ID features is completely optional.

Face ID is Apple’s way of improving the security of their devices. According to them, Face ID revolutionizes the authentication process of accessing an Apple device the same way Touch ID revolutionized Apple’s security systems by using a person’s fingerprint to access the iPhone.

Like Touch ID, Face ID, on the other hand, uses the biological structure of the owner to make sure that the owner’s information is safe when they lose their iPhone.

What is Apple’s Face ID Advanced Technology?

After years of practicing the Face ID features in their prototypes, they finally released the Face ID Advanced Technology on their iPhones available for consumers.

The TrueDepth camera captures accurate face data by projecting and analyzing thousands of invisible dots to create a depth map of your face. The neural engine can be found in these chips:

  • A11
  • A12 Bionic
  • A12X Bionic
  • A13 Bionic
  • A14 Bionic
  • A15 Bionic

They transform the depth map on your face and an infrared image into a mathematical representation that compares a similar model to your enrolled facial data.

How is Face ID Revolutionary?

Face ID makes it easy for iPhone users to unlock their phone, saving them a couple of swipes and clicks for speedy authentication and faster access to its applications.

For example, Face ID is still expected to work if you wear cosmetic makeup, growing facial hair, hats, scarves, glasses, contact lenses, and sunglasses.

Furthermore, Face ID uses infrared to detect your face and compare it with your iPhone’s enrolled mathematical facial data. It can work indoors, outdoors, and even in total darkness.

How do I Set Up Face ID for my iPhone?

You can set up a Face ID as soon as you open your iPhone right out of the box. However, if you turned this feature down while setting up your iPhone, you must follow these steps to activate it again.

  1. Open the Settings App.
  2. Face ID & Passcode
  3. Click on Set up Face ID
  4. After clicking, follow the onscreen instructions.

To set up an additional appearance:

  1. Open the Settings App.
  2. Face ID & Passcode.
  3. Click on Set up Face ID.
  4. Set Up an Alternate Appearance, then follow the onscreen instructions.

Do you have physical limitations? Don’t worry; Face ID will still work fine as expected. Just tap on the Accessibility Options during the Face ID setup. When you do this, you are not required to do a full range of head motion when enrolling your facial data into your iPhone. However, this option may be good, and it requires more consistency to work.

What happens if I decide NOT to use the Face ID feature?

Some people prefer the “Slide to Unlock” gesture to unlock their phones, a typical way of opening their iPhones when the Face ID feature wasn’t available to the latest iPhone models.

You can always turn off the Face ID feature in your iPhone’s settings. Go to settings, click Face ID & Passcode, and switch off the Face ID feature to discontinue using the Face ID.

Do I have to worry about Privacy? How do I know that my facial data with Face ID is kept safe?

Apple themselves answered this. Those who despise, or dislike the thoughts of having your facial data & information being stored for extra “security” purposes, have every right to be concerned about where this data is stored.

According to Apple,

“Privacy is incredibly important to Apple. Face ID data – including mathematical representations of your face – is encrypted and protected by the Secure Enclave. This data will be refined and updated as you use Face ID to improve your experience, including when you successfully authenticate. Face ID will also update this data when it detects a close match but a passcode is subsequently entered to unlock the device. Face ID data doesn’t leave your device and is never backed up to iCloud or anywhere else.”

Apple

Apple is well-known for having fewer security breaches as they constantly update their security systems to keep hackers and unwanted individuals from sniffing into your information. So, in my opinion, you don’t have to be paranoid about what happens to your data because your Privacy is one of Apple’s top priorities. Similar to the previously mentioned statement, they encrypt information to ensure that nobody else can access your data.

Update your iPhone to the latest software option via Settings > General > Software Update to fix Face ID not working. Or your TrueDepth iPhone camera might be obstructed or damaged so Face ID cannot recognize your face.

Here are the things that you can do without actually opening the iPhone itself:

  1. Update your iPhone to the latest software.
