Sometimes, you might have trouble with the Wi-Fi connection on your iPhone. One of the ways to resolve this issue is to renew your Lease with the network. Want to learn more about renewing a lease on iPhone and what it means? Read on to learn more about renewing leases on iPhone and what it does.

What Does It Mean To Renew Lease On iPhone?

Renew Lease on your iPhone means that the IP address assigned to your device by DHCP has expired, and you will need to renew its IP lease to reconnect. The IP address assigned by DHCP only lasts for a day; it will need to be renewed either by the network server or by request from your device.

An expired lease is a common wireless problem for iPhones. When you connect your iPhone to a Wi-Fi network, you will be assigned an IP address where the network identifies your device. This IP address expires after a day or so.

This lease is auto-renewed either by your network server or by sending a request from your iPhone.

How To Renew iPhone lease

  1. Go to settings on your iPhone> WiFi and tap on the information icon (i)
  2. Next to a Wi-Fi network scroll down and top on Renew lease

However, you will rarely need to renew your Lease manually; this is only needed if you had a problem during the renewal process that left the IP address invalid. A problem like power fluctuation during the renewal process may render your IP address to become invalid. In this case, you will need to either manually Renew Lease from your iPhone’s Wi-Fi settings or switch off your Wi-Fi and then switch it on again.

What Does Renew Lease Do?

Renewing the Lease lets the DHCP feature of your router reconnect to your iPhone on the network, reassigning the IP address to your device, which solves an IP address conflict. Also, it allows the network to reallocate IP addresses from other devices that have not been connected to other devices for a certain time.

When you tap on the Renew Lease button in your iPhone’s Wi-Fi Settings, it will request your network host to extend the lease period. Renewing the lease will force your device to contact the DHCP server and ensure that your address is valid and resolve the IP address conflict.

However, you don’t always have to manually press the Renew Lease button on your iPhone every time. Because when the Lease ends, most of the leases are auto-renewed by the clients to keep the service.

The DHCP address assigned to your device when renewing the Lease is not permanent. It is only leased to you for a certain time because many devices are connected and disconnected to your network during the day. Therefore, the leased address only stays valid for about 24 hours before it expires. However, this Lease is automatically renewed a while before it expires. So you probably won’t ever need to renew the Lease by yourself.

Does Renew Lease Make Wi-Fi Faster?

If you renew your Lan IP, the IP address will be refreshed, reestablishing all the local communications with your router, making your Wi-Fi receive a slight speed boost the WAN IP address remains the same.

Although you may notice a slight speed boost in your Wi-Fi, the Wi-Fi speed also depends on many other factors such as the wall density, directional antenna range, distance, and electrical interference. Your real Wi-Fi speed will mainly be affected by these factors.

The main purpose of renewing a lease is to solve network issues and address conflicts with your IP address. Your Lease is automatically renewed before it even expires. You can also start the renewal process manually by going to your iPhone’s Wi-Fi settings. When you initiate the process, you ask your router to use the network for longer than you were assigned.

The lease renewal process has more to do with addressing the IP address conflicts and less to do with providing a speed boost to your Wi-Fi connection. Although you may experience a little speed boost, it will only last for a few seconds.

Does Renew Lease Change IP Address?

Renewing your network lease on iPhone changes your IP address when you press the Renew Lease button in your iPhone’s Wi-Fi settings, your device sends a renewal request to your network which renews its lease and assigns it a new IP address to continue using the network.

Your IP (internet protocol) address is a string of numbers assigned to your device to identify it when using the internet. If you use an iPhone, you would probably never have to worry about your IP address because your lease auto-renews before expiration.

But if you do need to protect your privacy, resolve Wi-Fi problems, or browse websites that are only available in another country, you will need to change your IP address.

You need to go to your iPhone’s Wi-Fi settings and Renew the Lease of a certain Wi-Fi connection. Renewing the release would immediately change your IP address. You can also change your IP address by manually typing a static IP address.

Your IP address can also be changed by a VPN service to access content that is unavailable in your country. Most VPN services assign a different IP address to your device when you disconnect and then reconnect to a network.

What Does It Mean To Renew DHCP Lease?

Renewing a DHCP lease means requesting a new IP address from a wireless network and routing data from the DHCP server. You will be asked to renew your DHCP lease if the modem-router you are attempting to connect to manages DHCP and/or “mac addresses” services.

If you need a new IP address for your iPhone from a Wi-Fi router that it is connected to, you will need to renew the DHCP lease from the Wi-Fi router directly. You will need to do this whenever you face any conflicts with other devices on the same network. Renewing your Lease will fill in all your network details such as the DNS settings, the new IP address, router, and other info.

How To Renew Lease On iPhone

  1. On your iPhone, go to Settings and then tap on Wi-Fi.
  2. Go to the wi-fi network that your iPhone is connected to and tap on the info (i) icon on the right.
  3. Scroll down under the DHCP tab to find the Renew Lease option.
  4. Once again, tap on Renew Lease when prompted to confirm the action.

When you renew the lease, you will notice that all the information fields regarding the network have cleared out and then refilled with the new info again after a few seconds.
