If you’ve recently purchased AirPods, it’s important to know how to charge the case correctly. Then, you’ve come to the right place! I will show you how to do it step by step and teach you some helpful tips to make sure it’s always ready when you need it.
Can You Overcharge an AirPods’ Case?
The AirPods case cannot overcharge as the case is engineered to stop charging when the lithium-ion batteries are fully charged. So even if the case is plugged in, power will stop flowing to the battery.
You will see the charging light to know that the case is charging. The light should be amber or red inside the case. After plugging your AirPods case into the charger, the light will turn on for 8 seconds. The green light signals that your earphones have reached the maximum battery charge.
The main purpose of the case is to conveniently charge your AirPods anytime and anywhere with multiple charges in one case. With the AirPods 3, you get up to 30 hours of listening time and 20 hours of talk time.
If you charge AirPods 3 for 5 minutes, you get around 1 hour of listening time or 1 hour of talk time.
Can You Overcharge an AirPods Pro Case?
The AirPods Pro case cannot overcharge as the case is engineered to stop charging when the lithium-ion batteries are full. In addition, AirPods Pro uses optimized battery charging to improve the wear on its battery, improving its lifespan by reducing the time the AirPods Pro is fully charged.
Apple uses lithium-ion batteries for the AirPods. As a result, they can’t overcharge no matter how long you keep your case plugged into the charger. It’s engineered to stop the flow of current to the battery automatically.
Meanwhile, some elements can damage the battery in your AirPods case. Never leave your earphones under direct sunlight because heat can damage them. Likewise, be careful when bringing them to the beach or anywhere prone to heat damage.
Another element that can damage your AirPods Pro is water. The small batteries in AirPods are more vulnerable to water damage than typical batteries in many gadgets. So always keep your earphones from any source of moisture while using them.
I always keep my AirPods Pro in their case when I’m not using them to prevent damage. To get a more detailed discussion on this topic, you can check my article, The Complete Guide to Overcharging & AirPods.
Can I Leave My AirPod Case Plugged In?
The AirPod case is designed to stop charging once the batteries are fully charged. So they cannot overcharge even if you keep the case plugged in overnight. It’s a great innovation from Apple.
Keeping your AirPods in the case has many advantages:
- They are safer when stored in the case than keeping them in your bag or pocket.
- If you drop them into the hard concrete or swimming pool, the case protects the earphones.
- It’s less likely to get lost as both earphones are stored in one convenient place.
When the battery level is extremely low, I keep the case plugged in for 30 minutes straight. My tip is to avoid opening and closing the case while charging to allow the battery to charge properly within the first 30 minutes.
If you’re concerned about the battery life of your AirPods case, there’s no need to worry because it’s 100% safe to leave them plugged in no matter how long you want.
How Often Should You Charge AirPods Case?
Charge your AirPods case when the battery is low. Your iPad or iPhone will also receive a notification. The notifications will show if the battery level is 20%, 10%, and has a 5% charge. Depending on how often you use your AirPods, the case can offer multiple charging times until it gets drained.
The AirPods will produce a sound if the battery runs low. You can hear the first tone at 10%, and the second one will play before your AirPods automatically turn off.
I can charge my AirPods in the case multiple times and enjoy a total of 30 hours of music and podcasts or 20 hours of phone calls and online meetings. But on a single charge, my AirPods only last up to 4 hours of talk time and 6 hours of listening time.
You can charge the AirPods for only 5 minutes and get up to one hour of talk or listening time. So it’s convenient to have an AirPods case, especially when you’re always on the go for both work and leisure.
If you have an iPhone, it’s important to know if you ever damage your iPhones screen if a screen replacement is worth it. So I wrote a helpful post explaining the answer to make your life easier.
At What Percent Should I Charge My AirPod Case
It doesn’t matter what percentage the AirPod Case is before charging, but you should charge it before reaching 5% battery. To check the percentage of your AirPod case’s battery, you can use your Mac, iPod Touch, iPad, or iPhone.
On your iPod Touch, iPad, or iPhone, open the lid of your AirPod case and hold it near your mobile device. Wait until you see your AirPods’ charge status. Another way to check the status is through the battery widget on your device. The charge status will appear even if you only put one AirPod in the case.
If you’re using Mac, follow these instructions to check the charge status:
- Take the AirPods out or open the lid of the case.
- In the menu bar, select Bluetooth.
- Tap on the AirPods under the menu tab.
You will get notifications when your battery is running low. Make sure to charge your AirPods before they turn off. The case can provide multiple charging times, so always make sure it’s fully charged before you leave the house.

Should You Charge Your AirPods Every Night?
You can charge your AirPods every night to ensure they have full charge the next day. Make sure to put the case, either the Wireless Charging Case or the MagSafe Charging Case, on the Qi-certified charging mat to charge it. The charging light should face up while the lid is closed.
However, you only need at least one hour to charge your AirPods case fully. When the case batteries are at the highest percentage, you can put your AirPods inside to charge it twice a day. To keep the AirPods charged up, you can keep them inside the case all night, so they’re ready to be used the next day.
According to Apple, a fully charged case can provide you with 24 hours of listening time. For talk time, you can enjoy using your AirPods for up to 18 hours. In addition, you can leave them inside the case every night, and there are no consequences in the battery life.
To store your AirPods properly, always keep them inside the case when not in use. Again, your AirPods won’t get damaged even if you leave them in the case every night or even every day. They are specially engineered to avoid overcharging no matter how long they are kept in the case.
If your AirPods look a bit dirty, you can use a dry cloth to wipe off some stains. If stubborn discoloration is on the AirPods, you can pour some water on a soft cloth to remove the stains. Never use any chemicals because they can damage your AirPods.
It’s important to be careful when cleaning your earphones as the liquid can enter through any opening and affect the sound of your AirPods. In addition, make sure to place them on a dry cloth to allow them to dry properly.
When cleaning the mesh sound covers, use a small brush with soft bristles to gently remove dirt. Make sure it’s dry so it won’t damage the mesh while the accumulated dust is removed from the covers.
Keeping your AirPods clean at all times will help prevent germs from thriving inside your earphones. However, they can lead to serious health issues when you continue to use dirty earphones for a long time. Also, dirt buildup may affect the sound quality and battery life of your AirPods.
Should I Put My AirPods in the Case Every Time?
It would be best to put the AirPods in the case to prevent them from getting lost and keep them in good condition. The AirPods case is designed to protect the AirPods and keep them clean.
The AirPods case is a case and a battery pack for the AirPods. Putting the wireless earphones in the case charges their batteries. You don’t charge the AirPods directly. Instead, you use the case to recharge them, so you’re charging two devices.
Charging your AirPods case is not that complicated. Check out the following steps in setting the wireless case using a lightning cable:
- You can easily charge the AirPods case even without the pods inside. However, you should close the lid to secure charging status.
- Connect the lightning cable to the port located at the bottom of the case. Wait for a few seconds for the charge status light to turn on. As the case continues to charge, the status light will turn off.
- For the power source, you can either plug the cable into a USB port on your Mac or an adapter to directly charge it on the power socket.
- At this moment, your AirPods should be charging.
Now, you can also charge your AirPods case using a charging mat. To do this, follow these steps:
- Put your AirPods case on the charging mat. Make sure the charging light is right on the front and facing up. Like normal charging, charge the AirPods case with the pods inside or without them.
- The status light should appear for a few seconds and then turn off after.
- If the light doesn’t turn on, you can reposition the AirPod case on your charging mat.
If you’re experiencing trouble charging your AirPod case, check the cable and ensure it’s properly connected and plugged in on the power source. Then check the charging device and cord to ensure they are working properly.
When it comes to charging lights, here are the signs you should look out for when charging your AirPods:
- The flashing white light means your AirPod Pro is ready for set up.
- The flashing amber light means you need to set up your AirPods again.
- The steady amber light means the case battery has only one charge left.
- The green light without the AirPods in the case means it’s fully charged.
- The green light with the pods inside the case means they are fully charged.
While the usual charging time only takes an hour to reach the maximum percentage, it depends on the charger you use and how long it charges. For example, if you want to use your AirPods much longer, you need to charge the case 24 hours to enjoy more listening and talk time.

Should I Take My AirPods Out When Charging the Case?
You do not need to take the AirPods out when charging the case. Instead, the AirPods will charge together with the case while the case is charging.
While your MagSafe case is charging, you should see the status light in front. If you’re using a wireless charging case, you should also see the status light in front of the case. The status light sits between the pods on the case.
If the pods are inside the case while the lid is open, the status light shows that your AirPods Pro is charging. If not, try to reconnect the cables to see the charge status light. On the other hand, if the pods are not inside the case, the status light means that your case is charging.
The green light signifies that your AirPods and their case are fully charged. If you see the amber light, that means your case only has less than one full charge remaining. It’s important to understand these status light signs to know when to charge your AirPods.
Leaving your AirPods in the case may drain the battery if the pods are still connected to the Bluetooth on your device. They won’t drain quickly, but the battery will still reduce the charge like you’re using them.
You can’t turn off the AirPods. However, some features will allow you to save their batteries. I’ll let you know how I preserve my AirPods’ battery life to enjoy a longer listening time on Spotify and podcasts.
The two features that I turn off to save battery power are the double-tap AirPod command and automatic ear detection features. Turning off these battery-draining features can help you preserve your battery, especially when you’re on the go.
There are no buttons on the AirPods to turn them off; therefore, turning off these features is the best way to avoid draining the battery. In addition, automatic ear detection keeps the proximity sensors on. Turning this feature off is a battery saver.
Go to My Devices and click on the “i” icon to turn off the automatic ear detection feature. You can still use the AirPods while this feature is disabled. However, you need to play or stop the music manually.
On the other hand, the double-tap AirPod command enables the smart sensor in the pods. By turning this feature off, you also preserve the battery life of your AirPods Pro for longer use. Go to My Devices to turn it off.
I always make sure that the double-tap AirPod command is off so that I can enjoy longer listening time to my favorite music every time I’m on a trip. I do it separately for each pod to ensure that the smart sensors are off on the left and right AirPods.
The case slows down battery drain while using your AirPods as Apple designed it to activate ultra-low mode when the pods are inside the case. Therefore, your new pods lose battery life at a slower pace than battery loss when they are out of the case because of the built-in smart sensors.
